Trotter special needs crashed tested transport chair

The Independence model is one of two smaller Special Needs Pushchairs made by Advance Mobility a division of the Baby Jogger company.

Designed for the older child from 5 to 10 years, with a maximum weight limit of 100lbs (45kg). The Independence can also be supplied with an Extended Footwell for a child over 10 years who is slim and lightweight, see the Independence MAX model.

For a child requiring postural support you can use a seat insert with the Independence, for example a Stabilo, Burnett or BodyMap Vacuum Support Cushion System.

single fixed front wheel

easier for use off road or in areas with steep hills recommended for jogging
extend the footwell for child with longer leg (i.e. the 'MAX' conversion kit)
less manoeuvrable around town and inside shops compared to the swivel wheel Liberty model.

fixed handle

positive action
not adjustable

For guidance we would recommend the Independence for those people who want it:

  • to go off road....and do it really well
  • to be convertible, to extend the lifespan of the pushchair for a slim lightweight occupant older than 10 years
  • to have foot restraint straps

  • you want a pushchair primarily for urban usage with non demanding off road use
  • the occupant is broad across the shoulders
  • you are accustomed to a swivel wheel pushchair and do not mind potentially limiting the useful lifespan of the pushchair in order to get this attribute
  • if you are not tall, e.g. less that 5ft tall (as the alternative Liberty handle bar is adjustable)
  • ...then the Liberty may be preferable.

If in doubt then call us to discuss !

We also sell a larger model with a weight limit of 200lbs, the Freedom.

There are also some extra accessories available, an Extended Footwell which extends the leg length, and a Head Rest Extension. If the occupant has a longer upper leg length than the pushchair's natural 15" deep seat can support then the Roll Cushion accessory may help in some instances. If the occupant is unable to maintain their seated position then the Pelvic Strap may be helpful. We can also supply a Travel Bag.

The Trabasack Lap Desk is also a valuable accessory which works well with the Independence pushchair.

    Please note:

    1. this product is intended for outdoor use, due to it's size it may not be practical for use indoors or shops.

    2. the product comes 'flat packed' and requires some putting together before first use - but it's not difficult and does not take very long. It is available in either Red or Navy.

Whilst the Advance Mobility Independence may be used for someone with special needs the hammock style seat makes it unsuitable if they require postural management support, if in doubt please seek the advice of your physiotherapist.

Background Info.

It all started with the Baby Jogger in 1984, and alhough most other manufacturers have tamed the three wheel concept for the city walker Baby Jogger have kept true to their roots and still produce the ideal sport pushchair.

Baby Jogger's mainstream products are high quality specialist pushchairs primarily for Joggers. But don't don't have to jog with them ! the large 16" wheels make it easier to push with a heavy occupant and it can also cope with rough terrain enabling you to go off road.
